Automatic Update Program

Background: CogniSyst's Windows implementation includes a live update program to obtain and install software updates for our CogShell environment and our other popular assessment programs. A version of our update program was shipped and automatically installed from our CD since January 2004. However, the update program itself has recently been updated, and users who purchased software prior to April 2005 should click on the link above to ensure that they keep their CogniSyst software up-to-date in the least painful way. The above link will install or update CogniSyst’s software update program itself. There is no harm using the above program (link) if your version is up-to-date (purchases after December 2006). The installation completes by running the Update program itself, which can then be used to obtain the latest updates for your target machine Obtaining updates do not (by itself) entitle you to use of an application that you have not purchased (is not enabled via PW) on your system.

Pre-installation note: Our update program can be installed on any convenient computer that connects to the Internet. Once installed, updates can be obtained using either the machine on which CogniSyst's software is installed (the "target" machine) or from a remote (or more convenient, Internet-connected) computer. When the update program is used on a remote machine, the downloaded (SAVED) updates can be transferred via network, memory stick or CD-ROM for deployment on the target computer.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  This and all other updates must be manually installed! However there are differences in how this is done manually, as compared with how it is accomplished using our automatic update program.

Handling Direct Download Links for Manual Updates

Direct download links are an alternative method that is sometimes the only possible way to obtain updates. The usual method uses our Automatic Update Program (AUP). However, the AUP cannot update itself. Clicking on an update link will bring up a dialog box, such as the one displayed below for updating our Update program.

When downloading a file directly from the target ("testing") machine, you can generally select RUN. With this option the file is actually downloaded and saved for you before it is run—so this saves no time. Save is generally preferable, and this option must be used in some circumstances (such as updating the AUP). Users selecting SAVE are warned that the default location offered by Windows’ Internet Explorer is next to impossible to find! This can also be true of AOL or web interface programs. We strongly recommend that you save downloaded files in a folder or location (such as your Desktop) that you can easily find later.

When the downloaded file is run, the user will see a fairly typical Windows installation application. Note that some updates will do next to nothing (finish immediately) if their software is up-to-date or requisite files are not found on the CPU.
